TEACHING/MINISTRY INFORMATION

Initial Procedures

Teams and Individuals considering short term work with The Joshua Foundation (TJF) should proceed through the following steps:

  • Notify TJF director of your interest stating who the Co-ordinator (CO) is who will be responsible for all arrangements.
  • A “TJF Visiting Ministry Application Form” will be sent to the CO.
  • Upon receiving the completed form from the CO, he/she will receive TJF's prompt response.

Opportunities

Download our Team Visit Ideas and read below.

These vary with the Long Rains (usually from late March to late May) and to some degree with the Short Rains (usually from mid-November to mid-December) in northern Tanzania. Opportunities are as follows:

General Team
Generally team size is anywhere from 6 to 12 people. Occasionally more can be accommodated. Activities are as follows:

  • At En Gedi Base: building and maintenance depending on skills and availability of finances for the work.
  • Near En Gedi Base: local church and school visits; orphanages, rehabilitation scheme visits under various ministries and denominations.
  • Away from Base: Town and village evangelism (crusade and door-to-door), food and clothing drops, TJF (and government schools) visits and TJF Schools building and repairs (depending on finances).

Please note:

  • The nature and scale of evangelism will be determined by availability of funds, P.A. systems and TJF transport.
  • Outreach evangelism may involve preaching, follow-up seminars, testimonies, song, drama, puppets, children's ministry, healing, deliverance etc.
  • Transport may often be by local bus.
  • The more experienced the team is, the more opportunities there will be for the team.

Experienced Personnel

  • Leaders' College: Training modules are conducted from February-May, and from August-November. Between 2 and 3 weeks of input is usual from a visitor (20 hours to 40 hours of class lectures).
  • Teachers College and Schools: Your inquiry will be directed to TJF's Education Director.
  • Near Base: Church, leadership seminar and outreach/crusade ministry can be arranged depending on funds' availability.
  • Away from Base: periodically more distant ministry may be scheduled elsewhere in Tanzania or further afield. Special arrangements required.

GENERAL OUTLINE

Background Information

MONEY

It is best to take US$ or £ sterling with you. (Larger notes, e.g. $100, and $50 give highest exchange rates.) The local currency is Tanzanian shillings, and you can change cash and travellers cheques/checks in Arusha without any difficulty. However, be aware that travellers cheques/checks give low returns. Credit cards are not accepted when shopping or for payment of tours. There are also a few ATM machines in Arusha – which take Visa and Mastercard – where you can make cash withdrawals (providing the card shows the “PLUS” logo on the reverse side of the credit card).

VACCINATIONS AND HEALTH

The only mandatory requirement is the Yellow Fever vaccination (although this requirement seems to change annually). Tetanus, Hepatitis A and B, and malarial prophylaxis are advisable. Bring good insect repellent and charcoal tablets (or some other diarrhoea medication).

Arrival

AIRPORTS

The closest are Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), 1 hour away from En Gedi, and Arusha Airport (ARK), 40 mins drive from En Gedi (however, Arusha is not an international airport). Others are Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (Nairobi, Kenya, 5 hours by road), or Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania, 9 hours by road). Internal flights with Precision Air are regularly available from Nairobi or Dar to KIA and ARK. Good bus services at much cheaper rates are too, but the journey from Dar is tediously long. We can book these for you.

VISAS

Kenya: Transit visas to the border of Tanzania are usually US$20 and are readily obtained upon entry. No mention of transit permits you to enter Kenya free.
Tanzania: Tourist visas cost US$50 for most nationalities for 2-3 months, and are readily obtained upon entry, at the land border, or at KIA.
Note: Credit cards are not accepted for payment of visas. Please ensure you bring sufficient US$ with you to pay for these

Being Here

LIVING EXPENSES

At En Gedi: US$25/day per team member. Invited mentors and lecturers to the colleges are free. Donations are appreciated. Transport costs are additional to this - depending on the location of the places you visit during your stay.

SAFARIS

Park fees are generally between US$25-$50 per day, depending on the national park. Private guests will probably travel in residents' vehicles, but most will travel with a tour company.

Tour Companies: All expenses are covered when travelling with a tour company, i.e., park and vehicle fees, full lodge accommodation. These are approximately US$160/ first day, decreasing by approx. $10/day thereafter. (Cheaper possibilities do exist.)

WATER

All drinking water on base is filtered. While off base, drink bottled water or soft drinks only.

ELECTRICITY

230V ,50Hz - Plugs are British 3-square-pin plugs – adaptors recommended!

SHOPPING

There are markets in Arusha where you can pick up souvenirs – wood carvings, paintings, batiks, fabrics, jewellery & basketry. It is all done on a bartering basis and you generally can pick up some good bargains. There are also a few more upmarket places for those who don't enjoy the market scene.

Personal items – because Arusha caters to a large UN / Ex-Pat community, most personal items can be purchased locally. However, we recommend you take all personal items with you.

INTERNET

There are Internet facilities available on base, and in town, for you to check emails. So if you want to keep in touch with home while you are away, get yourself a Hotmail or Yahoo email address before you leave home.

GIFTS

Some like to be able to take gifts with them to present to pastors, students or locals they come in contact with. This is by no means obligatory. However, some ideas would include:
Pastors – teaching material (books/audio cassettes), good pens, ties
Children – pencils, stickers, exercise books, balls (some of these things you can get In Arusha if luggage is a problem).

Please Note: prices quoted above may be subject to change. Please contact us to ensure you have current, up-to-date prices.
