Magugu Schools

Hard at work Africa's population is young, virile, revolutionary... and tragically lacking in good, basic education. Our Joshua Schools and associated others are training hundreds of kids, providing them with the chance to escape the ignorance and poverty cycle!

Joshua Primary School (JPS) is a prototype for what Tanzanian schools can become, and is revolutionising the way education is "done"! JPS caters for 354 children and they are loving it! Different sects and tribes, all learning together about their world, life, God and friendships, with the help of quality education and the resources we've been able to provide.

Joshua Secondary School opened in March 2007 and follows the same approach. Both schools are located in an arid, predominantly Moslem-animist region of the country, named Magugu.

In Swahili, "Magugu" means weeds, and in many ways that summarises the nature of the town. The area is particularly poor with chronic problems of illegitimacy, AIDS and other diseases. What a difference then, to find schools with brightly painted classrooms, newly trained, motivated teachers, and happy well-fed children! Adventure playgrounds extend across sections of its 16 acres where nursery and primary-age kids (in attractive, durable uniforms) linger to play well after school is over.

In 1997 this land was dust and thorn scrub. Now Magugu is becoming an “oasis”, and is transforming the surrounding community. Children are discovering that the education they are receiving is bringing hope amidst traditional damaging beliefs and practices. Kids are taking this new found hope back to their homes and sharing the freedom of Christ, while teachers are finding a place to implement their Joshua training.
